Staying Anonymous

In today's world, remaining anonymous is nearly impossible. Both your public and private information can be easily obtained by just about anyone. There are even sites online that list your name, age and contact information without your knowledge or permission. For some people, anonymity is very important, especially for those in dangerous fields like judges, parole officers and police men. These professions and many others can turn their everyday job duties into making enemies for themselves and their families. Others, while they may not be famous or have enemies, just appreciate their privacy and would like their identity concealed from the public. For whatever reason you'd like to be anonymous, here are a few tips to help you.

1. Disguise your computer's machine ID - Each computer has a unique address that identifies and tracks your computer on any network. You can either change this MAC address or send out a fake one to help keep your identity safe.

2. Use a temporary e-mail - There are many services that allow you to register for secure e-mail. Some are free, and some offer more premium services for businesses that you can pay for monthly.

3. Caller ID Spoofing - Better than simply Star 67, a caller ID spoofing service allows you to replace your contact information with a number of your choice. You can use this "safe caller ID" service for keeping your personal phone number anonymous.

4. Use social network privacy features - You can make yourself virtually unsearchable in the social network world by taking advantage of certain privacy features. If that isn't safe enough for you, use an alias instead of your real name and information.

5. Rent a P.O. Box - Renting a P.O. Box for your mail is one of the best ways to conceal your actual home address. As long as you are able to receive bills at the P.O. Box, many companies don't even need your actual home address. You can easily rent one from the U.S. Postal Service but many people don't know that some grocery stores and smaller shipping establishments also have rentals available.

6. Use fake information - For sites that don't require your actual name and contact information, make up your name and birthday. Identity theft online has become far too easy, so unless it's a secure site or business that absolutely needs this information, simply choose an alias.

7. Remove your name from the phone books - Not only do the classic white pages give out your name, phone number and address without your permission, but now there are "online phone books" doing the same. You have a right to remove yourself from both to help remain anonymous.
